CREATINA, WHAT IS AND HOW TO TAKE IT?
Creatine is an organic acid that our body produces in the liver from three amino acids: arginine, glycine and methionine, and then stored in muscle fibers. When a physical effort is made, creatine is released in the form of energy as an immediate fuel of the organism, especially during those activities of maximum demand and short duration (explosive exercises). It also has a nootropic effect, that is, it exerts a series of benefits and properties to maintain the health of our brain acting as a cognitive support. Creatine is therefore a source of energy to which the body can quickly access. This promotes that it serves as a great utility in the cellular function of muscle, bone, brain and other organs.
Functioning:
When the muscle needs energy, the cells are supplied with stored ATP (the main source of energy for most cellular functions), and the moment these deposits are emptied, the cells look for another method, less effective and slower, to synthesize it again. The concentration of ATP in tissues is zero, except for muscle tissue that does have reserves, although they do not exceed a few seconds of consumption. This makes necessary a continuous synthesis of ATP while hydrolyzing immediately (ATP cycle). That's where creatine supplementation comes in: creatine will help regenerate the ATP. This fact allows athletes to achieve "peaks" of speed and energy during short periods of high intensity activities, such as lifting weights or speed races.
But we should not think that creatine is just a supplement for athletes. The benefits it brings to the brain makes it be used in cases of people with depression or it can even be an aid for diabetics, by increasing the effects of exercise in reducing circulating blood glucose.
Creatine and food:
Creatine is present mainly in foods of animal origin, although it is necessary to eat large quantities of food to reach an adequate dose, so adding it to our diet as a supplement, in an appropriate way, is the most comfortable way to enjoy its benefits . The powder format is ideal to add to the protein shake or mix with any drink (juice, water ...) It is a product completely recommended for men and women who seek to increase their sports performance, as we have been explaining.
Creatine helps retain intracellular water, not extracellular as many believe. By increasing the intracellular water the cell "swells", so we say that the muscle cell is hydrated, which is essential for the athlete, since a hydrated cell helps burn more fat and lose less muscle protein.
Recommended sports for creatine supplementation:
- CrossFit, athletics, weightlifting
- Team Sports (soccer, handball ...)
- Individual Sports (martial arts, rowing ...)
- Training with kettlebells, functional training, high intensity routines ...
